Thunder Mountain Paints and Quarter Horses is the home of the incomparable APHA stallion BLUE MAX.  We train and breed paints and quarter horses here in beautiful Central Utah.

Update: Thanks to Cristin, Jessica, and Laura from the American Paint Horse Association’s Paint Horse Journal for the visit to our ranch. We were excited to show off our fancy black & white paints and talk about the serious business of breeding.  We were featured among several great Utah Paint horse breeders in the October issue of the Paint Horse Journal. Be sure and get a copy. While taking photos for the article our senior paint stallion MDP Maxwell Smart kicked up the

dust running around his paddock. Max is such a ‘showoff’.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Who wants to ride an ugly, belligerent, untrainable horse? We don’t and we believe you feel the same way.  With this in mind we began our horse breeding program and we’re starting on our fourth generation of colts. This is our program.
We have five phases of training:
Phase I: Beginning with the newborn foals all are handled from birth and most are halter broke prior to weaning. They are taught to load and haul with their mums and have their feet handled.
Phase II: Weanlings and yearlings are handled on a daily basis; learning patience by earning their PHD (post hold degree). They are groomed, bathed. loaded and hauled and continue to have their feet handled and trimmed.
Phase III: Two-year-olds are sent to our trainer learning more grooming and feet etiquette. They learn to stand quietly to be saddled without the use of a halter, ridden with a rope swinging over their heads, stand quietly in bucking chutes and alleyways, and follow a mechanical cow around the arena.
Phase IV: Three year olds spend the summer on the mountain with the young buckaroos moving cows, hauling salt, crossing deadfalls, swimming in the reservoirs and rivers, dragging fence posts, calves, and chasing the deer and elk. When we get these colts back in the fall they have had LOTS of miles put on them and their attitudes reflect it. When you get off them and drop the reins they stand and wait patiently.
Phase V: We rest them for a couple of months, get their weight back up and then it’s off to the trainer for arena work. There the 3-4 yr olds learn how to give to the bit, break at the poll, give to the leg, lope easy collected circles, change leads on command, back up quietly and sidepass. Roping training begins as does a little cutting and herd work.
They are now ready for whatever direction, event,  or competition that suits the buyer. Replacement fillies are required to complete phases I thru IV before being put in our broodmare band.
Visit our Ranch and Rodeo pages. We have some nice BROKE geldings for sale.
UPDATE: Our BROKE geldings have sold quickly. Make sure you contact us early so we can put you on our waiting list. At this time we only have one broke gelding left for sale: SOLD
AQHA black 4 year old  TM Stradivarius (aka ‘Crewcab’)  Just returned from several months of training with former WORLD CHAMPION Team Roper Jerold Camarillo. Crewcab is ready for the jackpots. Ride him on the ranch during the week then rope on him on the weekend.     SOLD
We breed for and require:
1. Kind and willing dispositions
Horses with nasty temperaments, obnoxious and destructive habits will not be tolerated. This includes our breeding stallions. Our horses are easy to train and retain what they’ve learned.
2. Sound structure  and pleasing to the eye.
This includes lots of bone, big round foot, proper bite, well-set hocks, deep heart girth, clean throatlatch, sufficient withers to hold a saddle in place, flat knees, well-laidback shoulder, big hip, wide-set ears, large kind eye, large nostrils, cow sense and a balanced conformation.
3. Pedigree
This does not necessarily mean what’s new and popular in bloodlines today. We have bloodlines that have stood the test of time by producing consistent soundness, conformation, temperament and trainability.
4. Versatility
We breed horses that will rope, rodeo, chase cows, swim the river,  trot along the rail, and then babysit the kids. Our horses enjoy their jobs and look good doing them.
5. Color
Everyone has a favorite color. We like black, black & white, buckskin, palomino, gray, grullo, bay, and dark cherry red sorrel. Our mares have been hand picked as fillies (never been bred before as we don’t want some one else’s headache) or we have bred and raised them ourselves.
6. Guarantee
All horses are sold  as represented with an unconditional 72 hour guarantee or complete refund is given.
We are Hall of Fame Rottweiler Breeders and look forward to accomplishing much with our horse breeding program.
